At first glance, all toothpastes seem the same, but their ingredients and effect on your teeth can differ significantly.
The right toothpaste can protect tooth enamel, prevent sensitivity and support healthy gums.
At Moj Dentist, we explain what to look for when choosing a toothpaste and why it is important to know its abrasiveness (RDA).
What the RDA index means
Toothpaste packaging often shows the RDA (Relative Dentin Abrasivity) value – an indicator of how intensively the toothpaste cleans the tooth surface.
All toothpastes contain tiny particles that remove plaque and stains from coffee, tea or wine.
Recommended RDA values:
- Children under 7: RDA up to 40
- Teenagers under 14: RDA up to 70
- Adults with sensitive teeth: RDA 30–50
- Coffee and tea lovers and smokers: RDA 100–150 (only occasionally, not daily)
The most suitable value for everyday use is RDA 70–100.
What to watch out for in toothpaste ingredients
When choosing a toothpaste, look not only at the brand and flavour, but also at its ingredients.
European experts recommend choosing toothpastes with gentle and natural ingredients.
Avoid these ingredients:
- Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) – a foaming agent that can irritate the mucous membranes and increase sensitivity.
👉 A safer alternative: Sodium Coco-Sulfate – milder and plant-derived.
- Triclosan, Chlorhexidine – antiseptics that disrupt the natural oral microflora with long-term use.
Use these toothpastes only short-term and on the recommendation of your dentist.
The ideal toothpaste for everyday use
The best toothpaste for everyday dental hygiene should have:
- low to medium abrasiveness (RDA 30–80),
- a formula free of SLS and strong antiseptics,
- fluoride content (unless contraindicated),
- minerals, xylitol, herbal extracts or essential oils.
